Wonderful "Japanese incense box" depicting a water buffalo. Measures 2 7/8 inches by 1 7/8". Beautiful turquoise colored glaze. C1840. Signed on base. Kairakuen. Kairakuen was the kiln of the tenth lord of Takugawa, Jiho, in Kishu. C1827 to 1852. See catalogue The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts ( Japanese Incense boxes rediscovered) page 23. This was a collection given to the Museum by French stateman Georges Clemenceau in 1959, considered to be the largest and finest of its kind in the world.
