A delightful example of the finely honed use of humor in Japanese Art as described so well in the book Playfulness in Japanese Art by Nobuo Tsuji, Spencer Museum of Art, 1986. This small bronze box is molded in a woven basket look with low relief figures of mice in human clothing on the top lid. Two smaller mice on the left are seen approaching two much larger mice on the right side of the lid the details in each is quite remarkable. The box measures 3 and one third inches long by 1 and one half inches wide and is three eighths inches deep. Excellent condition and patina. We date this one to the late Meiji period, circa 1885 to 1910

Chinese 19th century painted wood market or box. It has two covers which can be removed or lifted to put food inside. The swing handle is carved with mythical beasts at the sides and two women at their cooking pot in the center. The box retains all its original red paint and allover floral design. Excellent condition with one small wood curl missing on the handle. It measures 6 inches H to the lid, 13 inches H to the handle, and 11 inches across. Snuff Box woman of the evening c1820. Antique Hand Painted Tobacco Snuff Box depicting a woman of the evening, hand painted and in very good original condition. The bottom label states that this snuff box was purchased from Weiner's Antique shop Boston 11 Park Street corner Beacon opposite the State House Price 2.00 Sept 24 1935. The rare snuff box measures 3 and one quarter inches long by 2 and one quarter inches deep by 3/4 inches high.
