| - - - - | Marcantonio Raimondi Serpent Speaking to a Young Man c1505 Item # 5500 Click HERE to inquire about this item Early engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. Raimondi was born in 1402 near Bologna. He studied with painter and jeweler Francesco Francia. His first dated print is Piramus and Thisbe, c1505. He was in Venice by 1506, and arrived in Rome before 1510. There, he engraved (probably) for Baviera, Raphael's print entrepreneur. He began his shop about 1515 with his wife and students, most notably Marco Dente da Ravenna, Agostino Veneziano and the Maestro del Dado. After the Sack of Rome in 1527, in which he lost everything, it is believed that he moved to Mantua and then Bologna, where he was recorded as dead by 1534. This image Serpent Speaking to a Young Man, is among his earliest engravings, done circa 1505. Measures 10 and three eighths inches by 8 and one half inches.

The frame measures 23 by 27 inches and the painting measures 15 by 19 inches. Excellent original condition. There is pencil writing on the reverse along with a paper label and an impressed mark on the stretcher. The painting is framed under glass which looks to be original.

- - - - - - - - - - | China trade Southern Cross of Liverpool oil on canvas c1857 Item # 5651 Click HERE to inquire about this item Period antique China trade oil on canvas of the merchant ship Southern Cross of Liverpool, circa 1857, H. Manly, Commander. This particular type of sailing ship is called a barque. It is shown sailing into Hong Kong port with Hawks Peak in the background. The barque has gun ports painted on its sides, although it does not have any cannon. These ships were so painted to deceive marauding pirates. If pirates believed a ship was manned with cannon, they were were much less likely to attack it. This painting has been cleaned and mounted in a period appropriate museum copy frame and museum stretcher.
