William Biscombe Gardner 1881 English watercolor landscape Item # 7920 Click HERE to inquire about this item William Biscombe Gardner English landscape watercolor dated 1881, depicting sheep herders with their flock next to a coastal bluff. William Biscombe Gardner (1847-1919) was an English painter and engraver. Working in both watercolour and oils, he exhibited widely in London in the late 19th century at venues such as the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery. From 1896, he lived at Thirlestane Court. He illustrated a number of books featuring the British landscape. This lovely watercolour is signed bottom left, and is in very good original condition. The image measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches and the frame 12.5 x 15.5 inches. They were 2 of 5 children born into Monroe, CT's most prominent family. Their father was a very successful farmer. Although the 2 sisters were 14 years apart, they were close. The began to drawing when they were children, and later attended and graduated from the Yale School of Fine Arts. After that, Fannie studied at the Art Students League in NYC. These accomplishments were very rare for a young woman in those days. List in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk. Exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art New Britain CT.
