Attributed to Michele Felice Corne, born in Elba, Italy, in 1752, died in Newport, RI, in1845. Oil on canvas, 29" x 36.25". Dramatic view of ruins and stone towers. Listed in Christie's Important American Furniture Sale, NY, January 18th and 19th, 2007. Corne grew up in Naples and was brought to the US in 1799 by Salem merchant Elias Hasket Derby, Jr. He was active in Salem until 1806, and worked with Samuel McEntire and William King, and helped establish marine painting as a Salem Tradition. After moving to Boston, he became noted for paintings of ships and naval battles of the War of 1812, many of which were engraved. After 1822, he lived and taught in Newport. George Ropes and Hannah Crowninshield were among his pupils. His work hangs in the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT; Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA; NY Hist. Soc.; New Haven Colony Hist. Soc.; and Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

- - - - - - - - - | Thomas Sully ink pencil portrait drawing of a young girl Item # 8508 Click HERE to inquire about this item Portrait drawing by American artist Thomas Sully B 1793 D 1872. Sully was a very famous nineteenth century American artist. This drawing was done in ink, wash, pencil on paper and depicts a young girl with the most perfect smile. The artist drawing was found in a Connecticut estate. It is signed TS. Sully signed a large amount of his work using these two initials. This drawing measures approximately 6 inches by 9 inches and is in excellent condition. The later gold leaf frame measures 16 x 18 inches. See Sotheby's New York Auction 12.01.2004 lot 73 for a similar example of his work, same eyes, facial features and signature, or to see other examples of Sully's signatures go to Dictionary of Signatures and Monograms of American Artists page 407. The son of actors Matthew Sully and Sarah Chester, Thomas Sully was born at Horncastle, England, in 1783. The family emigrated to Richmond, Virginia, in 1792 and two years later settled in Charleston, South Carolina.
