- - - - | Antique Raj Indian Occupational oil Painting Item # 981 Click HERE to inquire about this item "India paintings" antique painting,The English in India were curious about everything, particularly people. To satisfy this interest, as well as the English penchant for collecting, Indian artist painted sets of small pictures showing many categories of humanity. Just as tourists of today are assailed by hawkers waving postcards, earlier travelers were approached by picture sellers with renderings of local views, famous personages, local castes, and occupations." [See ROOM FOR WONDER-INDIAN PAINTING DURING THE BRITISH PERIOD 1760-1880, by Stuart Cary Welch.] It is clear by the quality of this picture that it was rendered by a skilled artist, and is far superior to most of the work that was churned out by hack artists and hawked along the wharves and streets. The original handwritten label (reattached)on the back of the picture denotes "blacksmith" in Hindu. This painting probably originates from the eastern region of India and was painted by a very skilled artist. PLEASE click on other images to obtain different views of this well done painting.
