Marble abstract sculpture of a dove

Item # 8482
Click HERE to inquire about this item

Modern abstract white marble sculpture of a dove. The sculpture is unsigned but we attribute it to Masami Kodama. Marble is notoriously unforgiving; sculpting and polishing the stone to form a smoothly polished shape incorporating both rounded and geometric elements requires great skill. Masami Kodama is regarded as a master of marble carving. He was born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1933. He majored in sculpture at Kyoto University, and graduared with a Master's Degree in 1958. He came to the US in 1964 to teach at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as in many others, and in public, corporate, and private collections throughout the world. The sculpture measures 12.25" high x 9.5" wide x 3.5" deep; the gray marble base measures 6" square x 1" high. This piece is on display in our gallery at Old Saybrook Antiques Center and can be seen in-person by visiting 756 Middlesex Tpke Old Saybrook, CT 06475.
