I am of the school of stone carvers who prefers to start with a natural form like a boulder or a cut block which has been split or otherwise altered. The object now represents the beginning of a conversation. I work directly on the stone and only occasionally draw on its surface or sketch on paper.
Besides the over all shape, I consider the grain and markings which when combined with my personal imagery, form an organic, bio-morphic image. These are not literal images rather they are meant to be multiple, elusive and mysterious, allowing the viewer to participate fully. The choice of titles is enigmatic and serves primarily as an identification of the piece.
Hopefully the sculpture will be enjoyed in natural light allowing for infinite subtle changes to occur throughout the day.
