Containing older design elements, such as Northern Wei-type rings around the halo. The hair strands are flat not clumped so it cannot be earlier than Sung period. Facial features are Tang style but not quite as strong as period Tang. It may be a fragment from a larger carving but it is a period fragment. This stone sculpture's carving is quite advanced. It was clearly carved by a very skilled carver. The face is serenely beautiful and has a pleasing naive look. This rare antique Chinese sculpture measures 23 and one half inches high,14 inches wide and 8 inches deep. A fine acquisition for an advanced collector of Asian Art, or simply a stunning artistic enhancement for a fine home. Authenticity verified by Dr Marylin Rhie at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
