Edward Moulthrop large tulip wood bowl circa 1980. Very rare size: 28 inches in diameter by 19 inches high. Signed on base. Edward Moulthrop was born in Rochester, NY, in 1916, and died in Atlanta, GA, in 2003. He grew up in Cleveland, OH, and developed an interest in wood turning as a teenager. He received his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1939 and his graduate degree in architecture from Princeton University in 1941. He taught architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and then practiced as an architect. Wood turning was confined to a side interest until the 1970's, when he decided to set aside his practice to become a full time wood turner. His largest bowl was 40 inches, and he had to develop a special lathe and tools to turn wood on such a large scale. He preferred using wood that was diseased, streaked, or struck by lightning because these "flaws" resulted in complex patterns. He soaked the wood in polyethylene glycol for 2-3 months to stabilize it before turning it and coating it in resin. Ed Moulthrop's work is found in NY in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Arts and Design; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Detroit Institute of Arts; and the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery, Washington, DC. Original receipt from the artist included, along with an article from the American Craft December 1979- January 1980 on Moulthrop and the history behind his bowls.
