Pair of gray painted arrow and thumb back chairs circa 1900. Each measures 34 inches high to the back, 17.5 inches high to the seat, 16 inches deep and wide, and 17.5 inches wide at top. Made by the Leavens Company, Boston, MA, founded in 1900 by William Leavens. The company manufactured a variety of styles, notably their "Cottage Furniture", in the Arts and Crafts style. Pieces usually carry a brass plate engraved LEAVENS BOSTON MASS. Leavens "Cottage Furniture" designs tend to be of a lighter, less square construction than the Arts and Crafts pieces which many rival companies produced. The range included chiffoniers, dressing tables, writing bureaus, desks and dining chairs. The company were heavily advertised, distributing catalogues and trade advertisements. Leavens were well regarded, and remained in business longer than many rivals. They stopped production in 1930. Bio taken from justcollecting.com
