Rare Spanish Colonial silver candelabra. Alto Peru (Bolivia), late 18th to early 19th century. Solid high grade silver, finely cast and chased. The stem features a Spanish conquistador wearing European garments and a floral headdress, surmounted by palm leaves and a gourd; the candle arms are comprised of writhing serpents with delineated scales and heads, mounted with 3 deep cylindrical candle cups with palm leaf drip pans; the base is a stepped dome set on 3 paw feet. Impressive artistry, technique, and iconography. Quite substantial at 47 ounces of high grade silver. It measures 12" wide x 15" high.
