Japonaiserie hand made arm chair c1900 in original condition. Measures 54 inches high to the back, 18.5 inches high to the seat, 20.25 inches high to the arms, 23 inches wide at the arms and 20 inches deep. Soft black finish with muted gold tracery. Japonaiserie was the term the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh used to express the influence of Japanese art. Before 1854 trade with Japan was confined to a Dutch monopoly and Japanese goods imported into Europe were for the most part confined to porcelain and lacquer ware.
