Antique assembled pair of lifeguard oars, each over 16 feet long, dating from the 19th century. One has some old light gray paint on it and the other does not. Note the leather covers where the men's hands gripped the oars. Many lifeguards in the 19th century used boats that were launched into the water from elevated sheds set high above the beaches. This gave them the speed they need to launch their heavy boats out into the water past the breakers. This pair of oars came from an estate in coastal Rhode Island.
