Biography from Mystic Museum of ART: A member of Mystic’s early art colony and a colleague of Charles H. Davis and Henry Ward Ranger, George Victor Grinnell was born into one of Mystic’s old shipbuilding families—giving him the distinction of being a Mystic native in the group of artists drawn to this area from cities like Boston and New York. Like these transplants, however, Grinnell was captivated by the local scenic environment, favorably suited to a naturalistic painting style. Collectively, their art became a celebration of nature and light. In addition to his painting prowess, Grinnell studied music in New York City, where he became a distinguished violinist. He subsequently returned to this area and taught music at Connecticut College while studying art with George Albert Thompson, whose work is also included in this exhibition. Both men were members of the Mystic Art Association in its infancy. Grinnell exhibited his work locally as well as at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the National Academy of Design in New York, and at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts in Hartford.
