African Mende Mask Sierra Leone c1930. This "African Mende Mask" measures 17 inches high and is 8 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Mende people of Sierra Leone are located in West Africa. They are cultivators and their main crop is rice. They also produce a large amount of palm oil. Mende population is estimated at 1 million. Two important societies exist within the Mende culture: the male Poro society and the female Sande society. The rituals of the Sande society require the use of masks in their ceremonies.
