Pierre Jules Mene (1810-1877) was born in Paris. Although he received minimal formal art education, he was the most successful and prolific animal sculptor of his time. He cast his own sculptures in his own foundries. He regularly exhibited at the annual Salon, and was awarded several medals. He also won first class medals at the 1855 and 1861 London Exhibitions.
