Italian mid century modern abstract wood sculpture by Venetian artist Giuseppe Carli, signed and dated 1962. Very good original condition. Measures 17.5 inches high, and 19 inches high including the base; 5 inches wide at center. The base measures 6 x 8.5 inches. Giuseppe Carli was one of the foremost maestro remeri, or forcoli carvers, in Venice. He also carved sculptures in the forms of forcoli. The fórcola is an oarlock used on the gondolas of Venice. There are several kinds of fórcole, each designed for a specific kind of boating, and each of strangely compelling form. Their curved surfaces are actually different resting points for the single oar which propels, steers, and stops the gondola. The fórcola is thus broadly analogous to the transmission in a car. Fórcoli are laboriously hand-carved by an elite group of Venetian artisans, called Remèri in the Venetian dialect, according to traditions that have gradually evolved since the invention of these highly-engineered devices many centuries ago.
