Canvasback duck decoy carved by Hank Walker. It measures 17.5" long x 6" wide x 8.25" high. Henry A. "Hank" Walker (1919–1995) was a well-known New England wood carver who crafted hand-carved and painted wooden waterfowl and shorebird decoys. Early pieces from his Salisbury and early Newbury periods were hand-signed directly on the wood or bottom by Walker himself. Later pieces (typically from the mid-1980s onward) often featured a metal or engraved nameplate reading. The Hank Walker Decoy has a long and rich history. It was started 40 years ago by Hank and his son Geof. The two Walkers carved birds consecutively in a shop first established in Salisbury, Massachusetts and later in Newbury, Massachusetts. To a great extent the birds can be aged, and therefore valued, by determining where the carving took place and which of the Walker craftsmen created the bird.
