Rare American San Domingo mahogany dining table, Federal period, circa 1810. Drop leaves with straight tapered swing legs. Measures 63.5 inches x 52 inches wide and 29 inches high when fully open. The single board center is 18.5 inches wide, and the two single board leaves drop down 22 inches. Condition is excellent. All original, no cracks or warping. Seats 8. San Domingo mahogany, which is obsolete, is the most desirable wood for a piece of furniture. The natural beauty and richness of color is hard to describe. Swing leg dining tables allow more flexible seating than gateleg tables. The swing leg can be placed at any angle to support the leaves. Hepplewhite design is eminently compatible with other period antiques and even modern pieces due to its simple clean lines.
