Spanish 16th century walnut friar's armchair, or "frailero". Good condition, some early repairs commensurate with its age. Flute front arms, carved panel joining the front legs, and very low stretchers joining the front to back legs. The original leather back and seat, covered with red silk velvet, are attached to the frame with brass studs. The velvet is overlaid with leather and velvet applique work, embroidery and fringe. It is rare to find chairs of this period retaining their original and/or near period upholstery. Dimensions: Height is 43.5" to the back, 31.5" to the arms, and 18" to the seat; width is 23"; depth is 16.6". Note of interest: this chair was once retailed by B. Altman and Co., New York.
