William Biscombe Gardner English landscape watercolor dated 1881, depicting sheep herders with their flock next to a coastal bluff. William Biscombe Gardner (1847-1919) was an English painter and engraver. Working in both watercolour and oils, he exhibited widely in London in the late 19th century at venues such as the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery. From 1896, he lived at Thirlestane Court. He illustrated a number of books featuring the British landscape. This lovely watercolour is signed bottom left, and is in very good original condition. A colorful George Marinko (b. 1908--- d. 1989) cubist absrtact watercolour painting landscape on paper of Waterbury, CT, signed "Marinko" lower right, c. 1940s. Marinko is a very important American surrealist who worked in various styles and media, exhibiting at MOMA's 1936 ground breaking "Fantastic Art, Dada & Surrealism," winning a prize. Francisco Domingo Segura (1893-1974) mixed media portrait of a dark haired woman wearing a lace mantilla, circa 1960. Pencil,pastel and watercolor. The original gallery card from Galeria R Domingo R. Com Jose' de Barros, 301 1 and Cjt. 124 T 267 0209 Galeria do Centro, Edificio Governador S. Paulo is on the reverse. Signed lower right and inscribed to Miles Bond. Excellent original condition. Segura was born in Barcelona and studied there at the School of Fine Arts. In 1913 he moved to Paris where he struck up a friendship with Picasso, Miro and Gris, and became their faithful follower. He returned to Barcelona in 1932 and moved to Brazil in 1950. Niles Bond was a major collector of Brazilian art from this period and a patron of Segura. Bond worked for the State Department from 1939-1969, and was Consul General in Sao Paulo from 1964-1969.
