English heavy bell medal lathe turned solid brass apothecary mortar and pestle. Measures 4.25 inches high, 5.25 inches across its top with a 6.5 inch pestle. Excellent original condition. C 1790. The English word mortar derives from classical Latin mortarium, meaning, among several other usages. Lignum vitae mortar and pestle c1800

Mortar measures 8.75 inches high and 5.5 inches wide, with a 4 inch opening. Pestle measures 9 inches long. They both were turned from a single piece of lignum vitae, a particularly dense and beautifully shaded hardwood. Two objects of this size made from a single piece of lignum vitae are rare.
